Pros and Cons of Artificial Grass for Pets

There are two kinds of people when it comes to the yard. Those that love yard work and those that hate it. And one of the most time-consuming chores of the yard is maintaining a green, lush and beautiful lawn. Many outsource help by hiring a lawn maintenance crew, but it’s not considered cheap. Therefore, others use their precious time on the weekends to care for their own.

“Lawn maintenance chores take the average home owner about 150 hours per year,” says Ted Steinberg, author of “American Green: The Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Lawn.

Let’s talk about artificial grass, but most importantly, let’s talk also cover the pros and cons of artificial grass while owning a pet!

What is Artificial Grass?

We aren’t talking about that short, obviously fake-looking astroturf that you see at a putt putt golf place. Nope. This industry is growing 10-15% annually and investing their earnings into a quality product with many options and different colors. Some even have an added brownish thatch layer to make the product more realistic. Check it out.

Why Artificial Grass?

To save time, people are turning to artificial or synthetic grass for their yards. Time isn’t the only reason though. States experiencing drought or low levels of rainfall (like California and Arizona) are turning to artificial grass to get a great look without the effort and large water bills. Money aside, water can be a precious resource in many areas and it’s estimated that you can save an average of 55 gallons of water per square foot of grass annually. That’s a lot of water! Plus, some water companies in drought-prone areas will offer a cash rebate for artificial grass, up to $1 per square foot.

The PROS of Artificial Grass

  • It’s environmentally friendly saving water and prevents the use of pesticides or herbicides.

  • It’s very low maintenance.

  • The cost up front is pricier at $5-20 per sq ft versus .20 - .60 cents per sq ft of the real stuff, but overall, you can save money overtime with $0 annual cost of maintenance.

  • Many of the companies selling synthetic grass will offer a warranty ranging between 15-20 years.

  • Great for dog runs, play areas, around pools, rooftops, putting greens and decorative purposes.

  • Durable against play and pets.

  • Do you or your pets have allergies to grass? Have a picnic or playtime without the sneezing!

  • Zero worry about mud tracking through the home and pests like ticks are less likely to find a place on your pet or you!

However, even with a lot of perks there are some reasons you may want to pass on this approach for a yard.

The CONS of Artificial Grass

  • Pet urine doesn’t soak up or break down as well. (Although this is less of a problem every year with improvements to the product).

  • It still requires owners to blow leaves off, pick up their animal poop and wash down frequently to prevent a smell.

  • Although many are made from recycled products, it’s something that will eventually end up in a landfill, which is not environmentally friendly.

  • Many communities are adding rules and regulations banning fake grass.

  • It heats up easily. It heats up so much that it can cause surrounding real grass to suffer.

  • Could it just be a fad?

So What’s the Best Decision with Pets?

Unfortunately, we can’t make that decision for you. It depends on a lot of things like location and what’s most important to the owner. Having a mud-free home from pet paws might be reason enough for you! We personally like the fact that it prevents a lot of pests and disease.
